Chin augmentation can improve and balance facial proportions.
What is chin augmentation?
Clinically known as genioplasty, chin augmentation is a surgical procedure where Dr. Carpin places silicone or Gore-Tex implants to improve the contours of the patient’s jawline. Chin augmentation can provide balance for patients who feel their chin is weak, recessed, or otherwise not proportional to the rest of their face.
Who is a good candidate for chin augmentation?
As with any cosmetic procedure, there are myriad reasons a patient opts to have this surgery with Dr. Carpin. Most people assume chin augmentation is more of a thing for a man, seeking to have a chiseled chin. But the truth is, more women have this procedure to address a weak chin.
Patients often feel that their chin doesn’t add anything to their lower face. They feel it lacks proportion. In many cases, we see patients who feel their chin doesn’t provide enough space below their mouth and lips, the prototypical “weak” chin.
If you want to improve the definition of your neck and jawline, chin augmentation will do that. Also, many people have a slight double chin simply because their chin is somewhat recessed. This surgery will eliminate that.
What are the benefits of chin augmentation?
There are certainly one-of-a-kind chins out there. Kirk Douglas and Keira Knightley to name a couple. But everyone wants a face that seems even proportionally. Most tenets of facial beauty include a strong chin, for males or females. Dr. Carpin hears from patients who have had their chin augmented who note their new feeling of self-confidence. Benefits are individual, but if you’ve always hated your weak chin, this can change that forever. And you don’t have to work in front of the camera to want a proportional, balanced face.
A chin implant will be customized to give your chin increased projection and/or width. The procedure is performed in the operating room under general anesthesia or heavy sedation. A small incision is made under the chin and the implant is placed. Sutures are placed and a light dressing and compression garment is placed. Patients return home the same day.
What concerns with my face can chin augmentation change?
Our chin is always associated with our profile, but it plays a larger role than we assume in facial proportion. When viewed in profile, a small chin makes your nose look large. Similarly, when viewed straight on, a short chin makes your face look top-heavy. Chin augmentation improves the definition of your neck and jawline. It erases what is sometimes called a “natural” double chin, which is due to a small chin bone. A strong chin also sets up the balance between our face and our neck.
What results can chin augmentation achieve?
It’s easy to forget about our chin, but when we see a strong chin on someone else, it’s easy for many of us to see how our chins don’t quite measure up…literally. While we often focus on our nose, eyes, and lips, our chin is the key to our jawline and the strength of the lower face. These procedures are very satisfying for our patients.
Patients will experience pain, swelling, bruising, and temporary numbness. Patients will be able to return to work in one week. Most swelling resolves in 4 to 6 weeks, but it may take several months for the final results to be apparent.
How long will my results from chin augmentation last?
These surgeries with Dr. Carpin provide permanent changes to your facial structure. Once placed, the silicone or Gore-Tex implants do not degrade or move. They are there forever.
When can I see results from my chin augmentation surgery?
While initial swelling will mask your new chin to a degree, your results should be fully noticeable within three to four weeks after chin augmentation surgery.
The average price for chin augmentation ranges from $4,000-$5,000. A personalized quote will be determined after a consultation with Dr. Carpin.
Is chin augmentation painful?
These are not overly painful procedures to recover from. Pain is easily managed with the prescription pain medication Dr. Carpin prescribes, although many patients feel that over-the-counter options handle the discomfort.
Risks include scarring, firmness of implant, implant mobility, or infection. Additional risks will be discussed during the consultation.
